Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Bénard, or To Whom This May Concern,
My name is Rachel Rumas, and I am a third-year undergraduate student in Psychology. I am writing to you today to appeal to add a course to my schedule past the academic deadline of January 19th. The course in particular is PSYC 570 (Special Directed Laboratory), under the supervision of Dr. Jason Gallivan of the Department of Psychology.
The reason I was not able to add this course to my timetable before the deadline of January 19th is because I was not initially aware that this course was available to me until the beginning of the Winter semester. Through my involvement as a research assistant in the Mood Lab at Queen¿¿s, my supervisor (Amanda Shamblaw, a PhD candidate in the Psychology program) suggested that because of my interest in neuroimaging and MRI analysis that I inquire into undertaking a PSYC 570 Directed Lab with Dr. Gallivan, who specializes in the area. I first emailed Jason on January 9th, but somehow he missed my email and he was only made aware of this once Amanda sent a second email approximately a week later, as shown by my email correspondence evidence.
The Special Directed Laboratory involves collaboration between the student and the instructor to determine course objectives, course structure, meeting times, and grading scheme. Unlike most courses, it is often student-facilitated with the instructor merely guiding student research, and as such this required Dr. Gallivan and I to meet first and discuss learning outcomes before agreeing to undertake this Directed Lab together. Our initial meeting could not take place until January 19th, the day of the academic deadline to add courses. By the time we were able to iron out the details of the course objectives and grading scheme of our Directed Lab, it was January 30th and the deadline had well passed. Between then and today (February 1st) I have already begun to make-up for the time that I have missed, which I will detail in my Academic Plan.
I am hoping that these circumstances will allow me to add this course past the deadline, as I have a vested personal interest in what Dr. Gallivan may be able to teach me. I intend to apply what I've learned in this lab to my thesis project in fourth year, potentially under the supervision of Dr. Gallivan, as I intend to focus my thesis research on brain imaging and functional analysis, as well as any graduate studies I intend pursue within Psychology.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: The process by which I intend to make up for the time that I have lost will be fairly straightforward. Because I am the only student that will be enrolled in this particular Directed Lab under the supervision of Dr. Gallivan, I have not missed 3 weeks worth of material that other students will have gained by this point. Therefore, in order to catch up on any time lost we may simply restructure and adapt our proposed syllabus in order to accommodate for a late start to this research project.
I have already begun to make up for the time lost. Since January 30th, Dr. Gallivan and Joe Nashed (a postdoctoral fellow in the Centre for Neuroscience Studies) have sent me literature review articles that pertain to the brain imaging research we intend to conduct so that I can familiarize myself with the course content as quickly as possible.
Also, as there is no set classroom or meeting time, Dr. Gallivan and I simply intend to meet more often to account for any lost time. Similarly, there will be no exam, and my learning will be assessed based on a deliverable paper to be completed at the end of the term. The due date of this paper may be pushed back until the last day of exams, for example, and the instructional 3 weeks that we have lost in January may be made up in the examination period of April. This will provide us with 12 weeks of course content as per the general guidelines of other courses worth 3.0 credits.
As this course is so flexible and self-directed in nature, there are many options for me to be able to make personal adjustments to ensure the same quality of learning as if I had begun the course on January 8th. I am very passionate and committed to learning about neuroimaging and brain structure, and so I am confident that I will be able to accomplish these goals
