Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to waive the Faculty¿¿s one-term deadline for academic appeals. The courses for which I wish to appeal took place during the 2014/2015 school year. While there are multiple reasons for both my academic performance during that term and for not having submitted an appeal within the proper deadline, the most significant was the development of my depression, the symptoms of which I was unwilling to believe at the time. This condition severely affected my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep, as well as my ability to both begin tasks and to keep my concentration on those tasks. More than that, however, my depression most affected the degree to which I cared for, and had energy for my lifelong passions, including music, guitar, photography, and classical studies. I began taking medication the following summer, which was effective, to an extent. I also decided to take a leave of absence from the following school year, 2015/2016. During this time, I moved back home and was able to find a job. I came back to Queen¿¿s for the 2016/2017 school year with renewed passion and a commitment to finishing my degree. This has became evident in the grades that I received. Over time, I slowly accepted that I had suffered from depression and after speaking to an academic advisor recently, I became aware of this appeal process. I have plans to finish my degree in the winter of 2019, with hopes to subsequently apply to graduate studies in the Classics department, specializing in digital photogrammetry. I am appealing the one term deadline, and thereafter certain classes from my 2014/2015 year, to give myself the best chance at continuing to study the subject that I love.

Regards,
Mitchell Gleason
