Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am requesting an appeal of my PSYC 100 final grade to be changed to an credit. My extenuating circumstance is as follows:
During my final weeks during first year, I was hospitalized for several weeks where they determined I had a low-grade malignant tumor on my spine. I had major surgery at the beginning of April to remove the tumor and I was supposed to recover fully. With regards to school, many of my teachers allowed me to pass with the grade I had or I had to write an exam when I came back, such as psyc 100.
However, several weeks into my recovery, I was still in a great deal of pain in my back and leg. The doctors determined my nerves were being pushed together from the inflammation in my spine and that the nerves would scar like that and I would have this pain forever. This condition is called archnoiditis, which I am still dealing with to this day., which puts me in a lot of pain when I stand or sit. My recovery was not easy, mentally or physically. At the time, I did not think I would be able to return to school since I could not sit for any length of time without great pain. It was very mentally hard dealing with the fact that I could no longer sit or stand, meaning I could no longer play sports or live life normally. During the month of August, I began studying for the psyc test, with the hope that I could attend school but it had been 5 months since I had done any psyc homework. However, my new painful condition was something I was majorly dealing with and I was learning how to cope and live with this disability in my every day life. I was more concerned with the notion that I could not sit or stand, than if I would be returning to my next year of school.
