Petition Letter: Dr. Jill Atkinson,
My name is Cole Haggar and I am a third-year student enrolled in the Concurrent Education program here at Queen¿¿s. My teachable subjects are going to be in French, Drama, and Biology. I am appealing today to late drop FREN 343 (Fall 2017), under recommendation from the professor himself, Micheal Reyes, and Tess Grant, from Student Wellness.
Throughout this past semester, I faced with some new extenuating circumstances, and continued to cope with on-going ones. These circumstances are directly family and finance related, which had a negative effect on my academic success. Thanksgiving weekend was a rough weekend at home, and an excessive amount of abuse, both physical and verbal went on at home. Returning to Kingston after being home going through that I had trouble finding motivation to do anything. At this time, I had a 20 assignment to do for FREN 343 that I never got around to doing. A couple days after returning from Thanksgiving we had our midterm which I I showed up to on minimal sleep and received a 40, even though I hadn¿¿t missed a class that whole semester and understood what was going on. This class also has a 20 participation mark, and making it to class for the remainder of the semester was a challenge for me. Overall for the semester I received a 56 participation mark. It was at this time I sat down with Faculty of French Studies Director, Stephane Inkel, to explain my situation in brief. He immediately referred me to Student Wellness, in which I made an appointment and met with Tess Grant within 48 hours.
During my meeting with Tess, I opened up about my extenuating circumstances that I faced this past semester and have been facing my whole life. Firmly believing my case to be legitimate, she spoke to a few of my professors about my progression in their classes. Upon speaking with Mr. Reyes, he suggested to Ms. Grant that I appeal for a late course drop, rather than trying to squeak by in a course that I need. After speaking to Tess, the next morning she suggested that I see someone in Student Counselling, for documentation support, and potentially to maintain a monthly visit to maintain my mental health and my progression in a positive direction. I agreed with her suggestion and she booked me an appointment with Counselling, where I had my first appointment January 4th. My counsellor agreed that my situation is valid, and she would more than happily write me a supporting letter, and thought it would be a great idea to continue meeting monthly to keep finding to ways to make sure that this process is not necessary at a future date.
Committing myself to my academics is and always has been a priority for me. I plan to commit myself to continuing to see our counselling services as frequently as needed to make sure my academic path is completed successfully. Thank you in advance for your time and patience, it is greatly appreciated.
Sincerest Regards,
Cole Haggar
