Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
My name is Jessica Morris; I am a fourth year Biology student. I previously wrote you in April 2016 to appeal two courses from my transcript. This time I write to ask you for your assistance in helping me graduate this year by credit standing some of my course grades. In my second year here at Queens, I was officially diagnosed with Major Depression Disorder and General Anxiety Disorder. After struggling with my mental health in first year and my second year, I finally decided to seek help as my mental health started to become debilitating to my performance at school and ability to just function in daily life. I stopped eating, stopped getting out of bed and stopped living, all while trying to get through a full course load of university classes. In conclusion, I ended up failing two courses in my second year, and barely passing the rest. I have attached my letter from 2016 below for reference, it explains my whole story of that year clearer.
I am writing this letter, two years later to ask for your assistance, as I only appealed my two courses I failed, the four courses that I got a D in are now haunting me as I was to proud to ask for help when I should have. In my second year, when my counselor gave me this information of appealing, she recommended that I didn't just do the courses I failed but all of the courses that were not a true reflection of my academic ability, to ask for a Credit Standing. I was too proud to do that though, I couldn't ask for help beyond me failing those two course but now I have put my pride aside and ask for help. Please.
I am planning on graduating in September of 2018, I have to finish this spring semester and then finish one course in the summer but I will then have fulfilled all my requirements and number of courses I need. My only issue is that those 4 grades are holding me back from my GPA being high enough to graduate with the four year honours degree that I have worked so hard to finish. I am by far not a perfect student, I am not a genius and I have struggled to do well in my courses. You can see by my transcript I am not an A+ student, but I am not a student that achieves D's. I have had one other grade like that in all four years of being at Queen's, it is not an accurate reflection of me, it was me struggling but working so hard to just pass and succeed.
I have struggled all four years at Queen's, my mental health has been a roller coaster, I have worked through a concussion and overall University is tough. I have kept my promise to myself, I worked through my mental health issues, I still see a counselor, I go to Cognitive Behavioural Therapies, I attend mindfulness classes. I worked really hard to better myself and improve my mental health because I want to achieve great things and live up to my potential. I worked really hard to get good grades, and I worked really hard to get my degree and I am asking that please help me to finish this degree. I wouldn't ask for your assistance and to appeal these grades and ask for a Credit Standing instead if I had another option. I work hard, and I tried really hard and I don't want my second year to be the reason all my hard work goes doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
I know this isn't a standard appeal, I don't have the format of a future plan, because I executed my future plan and I succeeded. I don't have a letter from health care but I have a past appeal that was granted because my supporting documentation and circumstances were valid and real two years ago. I don't think the four D grades were accurate of my academic abilities, and I really don't want my degree to go down the toilet because of them. Thank you for taking the time to consider my appeal again and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Sincerely,
Jessica Morris
