Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Warren Steele and I am currently enrolled at Queen¿¿s University taking one course per semester. I am appealing the deadline for course admission and I would like the opportunity to enroll in two additional courses this semester.

The reason for my late application for these additional courses is due to my unexpected release from the Kingston Frontenacs Hockey team this past week (please see the attached media story). During my previous two years on the team, I have been committed to my academics as a part-time student. My time in the OHL has come to an abrupt halt on Tuesday, September 23rd and I knew immediately that it was time to re-consider my future and make my main priority my future academics career. I look forward to taking on this new challenge.

The OHL is a semi-professional league, and playing hockey was a job for me resulting in my academic pursuits being put on hold while I pursued my dream of playing professional hockey. Being relieved from my duty as a hockey player I have decided to pursue my, just as ambitious, dream of becoming a lawyer here at Queen¿¿s University. Unfortunately due to the rigorous and demanding hockey schedule that the OHL presents (68 regular season games per year and significant travel), I was only able to manage one university course. I realize that the timing of my departure from the Frontenac¿¿s isn¿¿t ideal as the course deadline was almost a week ago, therefore I was not able to enrol into a full-time course load at Queen¿¿s. My organizational and time-management skills allowed me to pursue my career as a hockey player and to achieve a 2.2 GPA in my courses taken thus far. I believe that with the ability to focus more time on academic studies that I can increase my course load and achieve a higher GPA.

I have come to realize that at this point in time I need to focus my time on my academics at Queen¿¿s University and on my future. Unlike others in first year, I will enter University as a 20-year old with a clear sense of purpose as to my professional career and I wish to commit myself fully to my dream of graduating from Queen¿¿s and pursuing a law degree.

In order to attend Queen¿¿s full-time, it is mandatory to pick up two more courses to continue my progression to full-time studies. This unexpected change to my career as a student, and hockey player was definitely an emotional and stressful time. However, upon reflection I am excited and fully committed to this new academic path and I am hopeful that the Appeal Panel will look favourable upon my appeal.

I am fully aware that my application is late and that I have missed several weeks of course material in each class. I am confident in my ability to catch-up and am fully prepared to dedicate the additional time and effort required to ensure that I meet, and exceed, the necessary course requirements.

I have personally been in contact with my Professors and have discussed the readings and assignments that I have missed to date. They are being extremely helpful in ensuring that I make up for the weeks missed successfully and I have already requested the readings and assignments.

Further, I have in contact with the course professors and TA¿¿s and have received information with regard to the course readings and assignments. As a Kingston resident, for the past four years, I have been fortunate to be provided the privilege of surrounding myself with a excellent support network. I currently live off campus with my Aunt and Uncle here in Kingston and will continue to do so as I attend Queen¿¿s. This provides the advantage of additional family support and the necessary environment that will allow me to focus on my academics and my main priority of becoming a lawyer.

Although hockey is no longer my professional aspiration, it remains a significant element in my life and is important to my physical health and well-being, I will utilize the support of the Athletic Department's Academic Support Program and Tutoring/Mentoring program to assist me in my academic pursuits.

I am prepared and look forward to begin this new chapter in my life at Queen¿¿s University with your positive consideration of my appeal.

I would like to thank the Appeal Panel for their time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Warren Steele

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Academic Plan

My name is Warren Steele and I have constructed this academic plan to promote success in my studies as a full-time student at Queen¿¿s University. I am currently only enrolled in one course and wish to enrol in a minimum of two more university courses. I believe that my current GPA of 2.20 does not reflect fairly upon my academic abilities and am certain that with studies now being my main priority I will succeed in raising my grade point average. The winter term of 2014 I was enrolled in one university course and registered a 3.5 while working full-time. This result excites me for the future as I take on a full-course load dedicating all my time and energy into reaching my ultimate goal, to become a lawyer.

The semester already being several weeks along will hold some challenges for me as a student but am prepared to face them head on with hard-work, dedication, and the support from the people around me. To begin catching up in my courses I have taken advantage of the support from my Professors and TA¿¿s as they have provided me with the materials missed to date. I also plan to meet with the professor or TA of each course to go over any questions or complications I may have with the material to ensure a full understanding is reached. I was instantly in contact with my professors when I realized that attending Queen¿¿s full-time was an attainable goal and have wasted no time becoming aware of what I¿¿ve missed and catching up. I have obtained the text¿¿s Atwood¿¿s The Handmaid¿¿s Tale and then Mary Shelley¿¿s Frankenstein (the 1818 version) and am well on my to completing these readings. Following these readings there is a 1000 word essay to be completed. Also, I have proceeded ahead in my online sociology course allowing myself to devote more time in energy into completing the missed readings and assignments from other courses. Being a distance studies student is advantageous for me as I am able to eliminate any travel time and devote my efforts to this recovery process. Another skill I am taking advantage of is the ability to delegate my time according to each class. Each course syllabus states a standard 9-10 hours a week is to be spent on readings and assignments but under my particular circumstances I am adding a minimum 8 extra hours every week to ensure my recovery will be successful. Once caught up in my studies I intend to carry my momentum and work ethic throughout the semester and ultimately in my academic career. I truly believe that the work ethic I gained from my hockey career can be transferred to full-time studies and look forward to the challenges that I am faced with. Furthermore, I will take advantage of the additional support from the Athletic Department's Academic Support Program and Tutoring/Mentoring program. The support program from the Athletic Department have already put me in contact with tutors to begin my recovery from entering these courses late.

In addition to the support from faculty and support programs, I am also fortunate to take advantage of the support from family. I reside with my aunt and uncle here in Kingston off-campus and they have provided me with the comfort of a home and fully support my studies. At the age of 20, I have begun my full-time studies later than normal and this provides me with extra motivation to make up for lost time. I am also motivated to succeed academically throughout my undergraduate program in order to take the LCAT and be accepted into Law school here at Queen¿¿s. I am fully committed to my future as a full-time student here at Queen¿¿s and look forward to attending such a prestigious university.
