Petition Letter: Dear Johanne Benard, Ph.D.
My name is Nicolai Bopp I am a first year student here at Queen¿¿s. This appeal is regarding dropping two courses ECON111 and ECON112 after the outlined academic deadline. I recently returned from a required year to withdraw after I had my decision appealed and returned this January. Upon my return I was keen on giving the two economics courses I previously failed another shot, my reasoning behind this decision was that I have always enjoyed real world economic applications and have a genuine interest in the material. However, I have had consistent struggles with the math side of economics, even after seeking help from tutors I still find myself feeling lost and becoming more discouraged in my course selection. I am currently taking German 101, I am enjoying the course and feel that I will do well in it this semester. This has further frustrated me because I feel that I am putting far less time into German than economics yet I am not doing nearly as well. Outside of school, in February my older brother was arrested and sent to rehab. This process left me feeling not myself for a while, during that time I found that although I functioned day to day my mind was constantly elsewhere. I plan on taking one course this summer however the subject is still undecided, and would like to change my planned major from economics to political science, I already have the POLS110 credit from last year. I fear that I will not pass either ECON111 and ECON112 and if I were to attempt to continue my economics major I would be required to take calculus this summer, which is a course I have struggled with heavily since high school. I believe that it is in my best interest to focus my studies on a different subject. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind Regards,
Nicolai Bopp
