Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing this letter to request an exception to the drop-date so that I may drop the course DEVS 333 (Winter Semester, 2018).
Due to a series of diagnosed mental illnesses which has been recently exacerbated by a surge in mental health issues and life events, I have had serious problems in this course which will have extremely negative effects on my transcript and my mental health. Dropping this course would provide me the breathing room I need right now to help get better and to help get back to being myself.
These mental difficulties and issues which I encountered came about at a time when I was to hand in an assignment that was worth 40 in this course. Unfortunately I was unable to do so as a result of what I was experiencing and thus am now uncertain I can pass the course and absolutely certain my GPA and transcript will be negatively effected even if I manage to pass. I do not need this course to graduate as in previous semesters when I was feeling better I took extra courses and thus would prefer to simply drop it. Included in my appeal is a note from one the Queen's councillors at the student wellness centre who is in agreement that this is my best option.
In regards to a future success plan, I have made made personal adjustments to help myself remain in a better state in the future including appointments with a counsellor in the student wellness centre. Though I am graduating this year I am interested in pursuing further studies and thus having this course's grade blemish my transcript in my final year would be really unfortunate. With the breathing room the stress of DEVS 333 being removed would give me and with the summer to help cultivate a good routine for myself I am confident I will be successful in my future academic pursuits.
Please consider my request and feel free to contact me if clarification is needed.
Thank you,
- Cheryne Winstanley-Hayes
