Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
At the suggestion of my professor, I am writing this letter to apply for an aegrotat appeal, for my grade in GPHY 243: Geographic Information Science. Because of my symptoms from a concussion, I was unable to complete three lab assignments (worth 35) prior to December 1, 2017, all of which required the use of computer screens. These assignments were as follows:
¿¿ Lab 3 (10): Due on October 30
¿¿ Lab 4 (10): Due on November 13
¿¿ Lab 5 (15): Due on December 1
On October 25, 2017, I was diagnosed with a concussion, after hitting my head on October 19, 2017. I then visited the doctor again on October 29, where I was advised to take time away from any activities that stimulated my brain (looking at screens extensively, listening to music¿). Consequently, I was unable to spend a sufficient amount of time looking at screens, as was required to complete these computer lab assignments. As time progressed, I returned to my lab section in small doses of time to work on my assignments, but was unable to get far without the reoccurrence of symptoms.
Over the course of the month I was also struggling to connect with the professor in person, and unable to communicate online because of my symptoms. Meanwhile, I had worked with professors in other courses to rearrange deadlines, assigning an ¿¿incomplete¿ grade to one. On November 29, I was finally able to meet with my professor. As his TA¿¿s finished their terms on December 1, 2017, he noted that there would be nobody to mark my assignments should I submit them after that date. Provided that I was still symptomatic (as confirmed by a doctor again on January 4, 2018), he then advised that I write the final and then apply for this appeal, as I was still on course to have completed, and passed, 65 of the course. Fortunately, with strategies I got from Student Wellness Services, as well as by withdrawing from extra curricular activities, I was able to sufficiently catch up on the aspects of the course that did not involve screen-work, by the time of our exam on December 18, 2017.
Moving forward, I will continue to develop upon recovering and self-care strategies I have learned about from my visits to Student Wellness Services, in order to stay on track during my final semester of my undergraduate degree. As well, to avoid recurring symptoms, I have created study schedules that balance out my readings, evenly distributing work for courses that require computer-based work, with work for those that can be done without screens.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration in reading this letter.
Sincerely,
Charlotte Corelli
