Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jill Atkinson,
I am appealing to drop ARTH 214, ARTH 242 and MUSC 292 (Fall 2017).
Last semester I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control that directly impacted my academic performance. I experienced a traumatic event at Homecoming on October 14.

In ARTH 214 I completed the first essay and the first two online quizzes. On October 14 the incident occurred. Due to the effect that this incident had on my mental health, I was unable to complete the second essay and missed the next two quizzes, even with an extension. I had planned to complete the third quiz and makeup assignment for this class, but ultimately could not complete either of them due to a lack of motivation caused by my poor mental health.

I began ARTH 242 with getting a 46 on the first quiz. Before the traumatic event during Homecoming, I was determined to do well on future tests and assignments to bring my mark up in this class and believed I could do well. Unfortunately I could not complete the first essay, even after asking the teacher for an extension. I found it very hard to concentrate on my schoolwork and could not find the motivation to study for the next test. I did not show up for the in class exam because I did not see a point in attending, as I knew I already failed the class.

In MUSC 292 I tried to complete assignments and did well on the first few. After the incident I still tried to hand in assignments, but ultimately didn¿¿t hand in two and handed in a few others incomplete. I also could not effectively study for the exam due to a lack of concentration and motivation.

I went to see my therapist, Kate Hanton and sought medical attention from Queens Health Services


Planning on changing my program from music major and art history minor to music and art history medial. I¿¿m also going to be having regular meetings with my therapist. I¿¿ve increased regular meetings with tutors.
I believe that accessing these supports will help me reach my goal of graduating from my program. These resources will help keep me on track and keep me motivated to do well in all of my classes.
