To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Graham Shearing I am a first year student at Queens University and I am appealing to have my STAT 263 grade changed to a CR.
I have accommodations (time and a half) for my exam writing, as I have a slow processing speed from thought to writing. This fall was my first time writing exams here and I had three exams before statistics all of which were in the morning. For these three exams the extra time was allotted after the regular exam period was terminated, which I realize in retrospect was due to the fact that these were morning exams. This meant that I would arrive at my exam at the time indicated on Solus and receive my accommodations of extra time afterwards. I was completely oblivious to the fact that extra time could be allotted before an exam and given that I could view my exam start times on Solus and when I arrived at the (Solus) indicated exam time I received extra time afterwards without an issue. I did not realize that I had been receiving emails specifying my specific accommodation start times. Statistics was an evening exam and so due to my ignorance; I arrived at the regular start time and began writing my exam, still oblivious to the fact that I had arrived late. Only once the proctor announced that there was 30 minutes remaining did I realize the mistake I had made. In the end I barely completed half of the exam and my result ended up being detrimental to my final grade in the course, a course I had been performing relatively well in. I have attached in the supporting documents section all the grades posted on onq leading up to the exam as further endorsement of my course performance.
I hope to have this grade changed to a CR specifically because I am a first year science student and must meet a certain GPA standard in order to enter many degree plans. This exam was not only detrimental to my course grade but also my GPA as a whole, which would otherwise have been quite high. I entered statistics as a first year student because I have an interest in math and, as it is a prerequisite for many biological science programs. This exam mishap is without a doubt my mistake and a result of my lack of knowledge pertaining to the Queen¿¿s exam protocol, however it would be a shame if it inhibited my ability to enter my program of choice.
For supporting documentation, along with my pre-exam grades, I have attached an email thread with my professor, in which he stated that he would support my appeal, and my letter of accommodation.
It goes without saying that this sort of thing will never happen again. It was my first time writing exam in a university setting and I was completely ignorant to the Queen¿¿s exam protocol.
