Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean, April 9th, 2018

I am writing to you to request a deadline wave for appealing various courses that I have taken in my time at Queens. I feel that my transcript reflects my struggles with mental health and domestic circumstances and I am finally finding the courage and stability to address them.

The past three years have been very important to me. I constantly battled with depression and my eating disorder, while carrying the weight of a domestic problem that is always present. Throughout those three years, these things made it extremely difficult to leave the house, go to class, and focus on learning. Above all, however, I have experienced growth. I understand that in order to take my education in the direction I want (an eventual masters degree), I must immidiately patch up my transcript and create an action plan.

This is the first step of my action plan. I understand that it has taken me this long to appeal due to my long-term mental health battle (2014-2017) and lack of an end goal. I have realized how closely linked my depression, eating disorder, and domestic problems are to eachother, and found many ways to live above them.

Queens councilling services have been of aid to me and my recovery throughout these years, but I have also found other ways of coping that work best for me. I have immersed myself in extra-curriculars such as Existere (the theatrical frosh week play), The Breakfast Club, being a musician in the Vogue Charity Fashion Show, and a musician for Down There. These gave me no choice but to show up, be creative, and build a healthy social support group. I have implimented exercise into my daily routine, which has helped with my eating disorder and depression. I do believe that vanity and lack of self worth were deeply rooted in my eating disorder, and accepting that has helped me overcome those darker traits. I have found that although my domestic problems have been around my entire life, they have come to surface as I got older and had the courage to unpack them (conviently as I began my undergrad). I have went to therapy of all types and read the book ¿¿Adult Children of Alcoholics Trauma Syndrome¿ twice through. It has been a process of difficult self-confronting, but has lead to hard healing that I feel I have earned.

I have achieved a balance and understanding in my mental health, and feel in control of my future and education. I plan to appeal to drop the three failed courses DEVS100(2015 Fall/2016 Winter), DRAM205 (2016 Winter), ENG100(2015 Fall/2016 Winter). I also plan to appeal to receive Credit Standing in ENG160 (2015 Winter), GHPY101 (2014 Fall), GPHY 103(2015 Winter), and MUSC171 (2014 Fall), as well as drop my requirement to withdrawl from my transcript.

This year I have taken a lighter course load and have begun to look at my education differently. I have linked my education and self worth, and realize that knowledge translates to confidence and happiness. I now understand what makes me passionate about learning and am eager to gain as much from my future courses as possible.

As for the future, I have constructed a plan that I know adheres to my strengths, weaknesses, and passions. I would like to clean my transcript enough to be accepted to study on a Letter of Permission at University of Guelph, closer to my hometown and support system. I will take Queens courses throughout the Summer and waste no more time in getting my education, which I hope to finish at Queens University.

I would truly appreciate your consideration for my requests. I know that I have to put in the hard work, and I am eager to do so. Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,
Sarah-Anne Thompson
