Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies
I am appealing to the Faculty of Arts and Science to drop CISC 101 from my Winter 2018 timetable due to a medical condition which became aggravated during the semester.
Starting towards the end of January a previously diagnosed medical condition began to worsen due to stress. As the semester progressed it became clear that I would not be able to finish a full semester successfully due to my condition and I therefore reduced my course load to accommodate myself as I saw necessary at the time. This left me with CISC 101 as my only course. After reducing my course load I began to improve and was completing my work leading me to believe I would be able to finish the course to the best of my abilities, despite my illness. I was under the previous belief when the course drop date passed; however, towards the end of March my condition worsened to a degree that I was not excepting nor had I experienced in a long time. This left me unable to complete the remaining assignments. I also do not believe I will be able to write my final exam due to my condition at this time, which will automatically result in a failing grade.
Due to the above situation, I plan on making many personal changes to improve my condition. I have currently been referred to a local medical counsellor who can help me learn techniques to improve and monitor my condition. I have also been referred to a regional medical centre dedicated to helping people with my condition. In order to prevent the above from happening again I plan to meet with both of these teams in order to get the treatment I need before I return to studies. I also will be taking a reduced course load when I return as my condition is aggravated by stress and I now know from this semester that I am not able to succeed when under intense pressure from multiple courses. I will also begin searching for counselling in Kingston and at Queen's once I return to studies in order continue managing my condition. Finally, I plan on taking CISC 101 as soon as I can once I return to studies as I would like to have computing as a degree option.
Sincerely,
Megan Hollingsworth 20064496
