Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science,

I am appealing to the board to have my schedule overloaded so I can add the course MUSC 221, which is my applied lessons. I am a music major and I need to take this course all four years to achieve my Bachelor of Music degree. I have been attending all of my required lessons for this class and completing all the required work. I have also attached a letter from the Professor Donelda Gartshore stating that I have attended class.

Last year, I was automatically added into the applied lessons course and assumed this would happen second year as well. I understand that this was not the case and take full responsibility for that mistake. However, in September I tried to add the course with a few other additions and didn't realize MUS 221 did not go through for I had reached my maximum for credits. My schedule is already full from the courses I need to take to complete my Bachelor of Music and courses to fill up my second teachable in order to attend teachers college. This is why I am appealing to have my timetable overloaded. I have been attending all of my classes, including lessons, and have been excelling despite the amount of work. I am confident that the overload will not affect my overall health and well-being. This is a full year course that I need to take it every year in order to graduate after the four year program. I have already completed the work for the course MUSC 221, therefore, I will not be behind in the work for the rest of the year if the course is added. I understand that it is after the add/drop date, however, I need this class to complete my degree on time.

Again, I understand that this was my mistake and I am taking full precautions so it does not happen again. I have talked with my department head Dr. Lind, and am fully aware now of the classes automatically added. For the future, I will make sure all courses have been properly added so as not to have the same mistake. I will also make sure that I do not exceed the course limit in the years to come, so I will not need to make another appeal.
