Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,

I am appealing to remove a failed mark grade for the course Calculus 121 (Full-year, 2017-2018) from my transcript.

As seen on my record, my grandmother passed away very suddenly on December 1, 2017. I had an extremely close relationship with her as I have lived with her since I was just 5-years of age. As a result, I went home to deal with other family problems including family feuds over her will and to grieve and plan her funeral with my family. In this time, my professors allowed me to differ my exams for when I came back in the second semester. At the time I was extremely thankful for this opportunity and I still am but by postponing my exams I allowed myself to become significantly behind in my studies. In particular, my math exam was approximately a month into the second semester and I immediately fell behind. It was also in this time that I was dealing with a bit of a mental battle. This is why I performed so poorly on the fall exam due to an anxiety attack. I have a history of anxiety associated with my academics and a case of severe depression in high school. Due to my history of severe depression, I didn't realize my deteriorating mental health as a problem until the end of the year (due to the fact I wasn't contemplating suicide so I assumed this meant I was fine). I was dealing with a lot of intense grieving and low academic confidence which lead me to not have the right mindset in learning materials. I would like to say I believe I did try to succeed in this course with everything in my control. This includes going to all my Bounce Back counselling sessions, going to exam prep courses and meeting with a tutor quite frequently (if you need his contact information I can supply it to you). A profession in medical care is a goal I am striving for. So, with this being said my reasoning for this grade to be taken off my transcript is strictly due to my possible post-grad applications.

Sincerely,
Emma

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My future plan includes changing my program and taking the needed courses during the 2018/2019 school year. This means I will re-take this math course. To deal with my mental health, I am taking the summer off from my academics to focus on myself. I will also begin to see my old counsellor in my hometown to hopefully prepare me for another year at Queen's.
