Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to drop STAT 263 (Winter, 2014).

I was diagnosed with mono in November 2013, and have been feeling the effects of it ever since. Mono weakens the immune system, and symptoms can last for many months. Although I contracted mono back in November the effects have been ongoing the entire winter term.

My weakened immune system made me more susceptible to other illnesses, and I was sick almost the entire winter term. I got strep throat in February and was prescribed penicillin. I then found out that I am allergic to penicillin and paid a visit to the Queen¿¿s clinic. Weeks before and during April exams I got a very bad cold, which made studying a challenge, but I did not see a doctor for this. Getting the bad cold before and during exams made the normal stress of exams very difficult to cope with.

I thought I was over the effects of mono in January, so I took a full course load, however I did not realize the severity and longevity of the effects of mono. I realized too late that I should have dropped STAT 263, and over estimated what I would be able to cope with.

In the end the combination of the after effects of mono, the illnesses throughout the term, and a terrible cold during exams, I was unable to take the final exam for STAT 263.

My plan for academic success in the future is to take the ECON equivalent of STAT 263 (ECON 250) next year, as I wish to become an Economics major. If I am still dealing with the effects of mono in September I will consider taking a lighter course load to ensure academic success.

I hope you will consider my circumstances, and will allow me to withdraw from STAT 263.

All the Best,

Holly Foxall
