Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Arts and Science,
I am appealing to drop PHIL 374 (Winter, 2018) and LATN 110B (Winter, 2018).
In September 2017, just as I was starting my third year, My mother was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. She went from stage 1 to stage 4a within a month before they were able to begin the chemotherapy. At this point I sought out counselling with the Queens Counselling Services in order to deal with the large amounts of stress and anxiety this caused me, but was unable to secure enough appointments to fully deal with the problems. I was able to push through the rest of the Fall term as my mother was seeming to do well in her chemotherapy sessions. However, in January of 2018, the second round of chemotherapy stopped working, and the cancer began to come back and spread once again even through the chemotherapy sessions. I needed to be home with her, as the doctors stated there was only a 25 chance she would survive, but the travel time to return home and back meant I missed many classes. In February 2018 my mother was rushed into surgery, which I also had to be there for, resulting in more missed classes. These missed classes plus the anxiety that the potential to lose my mother caused in me made it incredibly difficult to complete assignments on time, and the PHIL 374 instructor does not accept late assignments no matter the circumstances. It also made it incredibly difficult to complete the majority of the biweekly tests in LATN 110, which made it almost impossible to keep up with the rest of the class. The surgery was a success, but my mother had severe complications as she went through the healing process throughout the rest of the winter term that resulted in her being brought to emerge three more times over March 2018. I attempted to find therapy elsewhere in Kingston at this point so that I could have a more secure person to help me through the anxiety, but the process to begin seeing the therapist was arduous and required repeated visits to my family doctor in Toronto. In order to not miss any more classes than I absolutely had to, the process took almost the whole month. Unfortunately by this point I had missed so many classes, so many assignments, and so many tests that my exam marks could not save my grade in the classes.
Moving forward, I will be attending classes regularly next year as my mothers health should be determined by the end of the summer. I am also now seeing a therapist regularly, so I will be able to better deal with the stress and anxiety caused by such circumstances.
