Petition Letter: I, Xifeng (Wendy) Hu, am appealing to add two courses past the add/drop deadline. The reason why my appeal is being submitted longer than several days after the deadline is because I had to prove my ability to stay in LING 100 by scoring highly on my first test.
On add/drop day, I dropped all of my courses to my dismay. After speaking to Dr. Bernard, several ArtSci academic counselors and professors from the departments of Linguistics and Psychology, I was preparing to defer my offer to Queen's. I had initially thought that because I was not allowed to transfer into neither the Linguistics nor Psychology program, I would not have been able to pursue my dream career (Speech Language Pathology) at Queen's University. On the entire ride home, I could not stop crying on the bus because I was heartbroken that I would have to depart from this wonderful institution. I had sacrificed a lot to come here: I convinced my dad to move from BC to ON to be close to me and I said goodbye to my childhood and high school friends to accept my Chancellor's Scholarship to Queen's University. I had also spoken to Carol Ann at Health Counseling and Disability Services regarding my lack of interest in Sociology, and she advised that I should take time off from school until I find a major that interests me.
As soon as I got back home, I did extensive research because I was determined to return to Queen's. I wanted to re-immerse myself in academia and extracurricular activities at Queen's University. I found out that my major does not matter for Speech Language Pathology and law school, as long as I take necessary prerequisites. This is why I returned to Kingston one and a half days after my departure.
I was told by the Psychology and Linguistics departments that cross-faculty transfers were not allowed into those two departments, as I had previously been enrolled in commerce. I was also incorrectly informed that a psychology or linguistics major is mandatory to get into speech language pathology.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: My plan for Fall semester of 2014 is to take LING 100 and ANAT 100. I had been following those two courses up until add/drop period, so I had only missed two classes of those courses. I have proven my ability to succeed in LING 100 through the results of my first test, in which I received an A grade of 86.5. The reason why I am only taking two courses is so that I can focus my energy on my missed courses and maintain a high GPA for graduate school.
I have friends in both LING 100 and ANAT 100 who I have already contacted in terms of missed notes, lectures and advice.
Shortly after my return to Queen's University, I booked an appointment with Dr. Bernard and an academic counselor. Dr. Bernard advised that I should take two or three courses so that I do not fall behind in my courses. My academic counselor told me that as long as I take summer courses, I would be able to fulfill my prerequisites for graduate school and graduate in a timely manner.
Since I am planning to major in philosophy to keep my options open for both speech language pathology and law school, I will be taking that course in the summer. I will take PHIL 111 either through Queen's Distance Education online, or at a different university for summer course credits.
As of right now, I have already caught up to all of my classes and am consistently reading ahead to prepare for future lectures. My plan is to take two courses in Fall semester and six courses in second semester. To prevent an overwhelming second semester, I am making notes for PSYC 251, a course I had initially enrolled in and is offered during the winter semester. This way, it would be as though I am taking three courses in first semester and five in second semester. Last year in commerce, I had a full course load of 33.0 units so I am accustomed to keeping up with a dense course load.
