Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear the Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to drop CLST 103, Introduction to Roman Civilization (Winter 2018).

I believe that my abilities within the course were impacted, thus influencing my grades negatively, due to my clinically diagnosed social anxiety disorder. During the winter term, my academic career and well-being were affected as I struggled with this debilitating anxiety. It is difficult for me to seek help with my academics as well as attend lectures at times, as these are social aspects that I often struggle with. My anxiety is ongoing and at times unpredictable, resulting in me dropping the course after the deadline. Writing exams amongst a large amount of people can also trigger panic attacks which can lead to poor attendance. I have been prescribed antidepressants (sertraline) and anxiety medication (lorazepam) by my psychiatrist to deal with my mental health. I do not want my academic career to suffer purely due to the disorder I have been diagnosed with, which is why I am appealing to drop CLST 103, Introduction to Roman Civilization.

I have provided medical documentation outlining how my anxiety has impaired my learning within this course.

To achieve academic success in the future, I will seek meetings with a mental health counsellor or therapist at Queen's. Also, I will register for academic accommodations and accessibility services through the student wellness centre. By speaking with a professional during the school year, I aim to improve my grades and benefit greatly from the material taught by my professors.

Thank you for your consideration,

Hannah Gouveia Bannister
