Petition Letter

Petition Letter: This appeal letter is regarding a retroactive letter of permission for the Summer of 2013. In the winter term of 2013, while I was in second year, and the first year of my FILM degree, I decided I wanted to switch my major to sociology, however I had not taken SOCI 122, which is a pre-requisite to becoming a sociology major. In the winter I received a letter of permission to take to courses from Athabasca University, SOCI 287 and SOCI 288 in order to receive my first year sociology credit and enter Queen's as a sociology major the following year. I received permission for both of these course and enrolled in the first one in February 2013. Because I have a disability it is not recommended for me to take a full course load, and as I was already taking 4 courses in school, and the Athabasca course on-line, I decided to wait until I finished the SOCI 278 to begin SOCI 288. I took longer then expected to finish the first course and did not enrol in the second until June 2013. At this time, I was unaware that the letter of permission only covered one semester. In July, I sent my transcript for SOCI 287 to the Arts and Science Undergraduate Department, after sending my transcript, I was informed that I would have to reapply for permission to take SOCI 288, as it was now the Summer 2013 semester. This lead me under the impression, that each semester that passed, I would need to reapply for a letter of permission for this course, until I completed the course, and because I did not know how long I would take to complete the course, I mistakenly thought it was acceptable to apply for a letter of permission for the term I was submitting the transcript in which happens to be Fall 2014. So after paying the 60.00 for a second time, and receiving an additional letter of permission for the same class, and sending my transcript to queens, I was informed that my most recent letter of permission was from the wrong term, and that I must apply for a retroactive letter of permission, pay the 60.00 fee again, before transferring my credit, and fully enrolling in to a sociology honours degree. So I am not appealing for the retroactive letter of permission in order for the course I have completed to be honoured, and to finally enrol in the sociology degree which I have almost completed. Thank you very much for reading my appeal.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: As my appeal is not based on my academic standing, If the appeal is granted, I simply intend to switch from a general sociology degree in to a BAH degree, and graduate in the fall or spring of 2016.
