Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
During my second year of studying, a sexual assault accident happened to me on Oct.3, 2016. After the incident, I was admitted to Kingston general hospital and seeing by the SA/DV team doctors. A series medication was provided, and the treatment time was a month; but the medication compromised my immune system greatly and some of the side effects like unable to concentrate, having a fever every 2 days, vomiting and loss of appetite affected my academic performance a lot. Starting Oct.4th, 2016 (the first day I was on medication) I felt sick and muscle pain throughout the body. The medication makes me unable to concentrate during classes and exams, unable to attend some of the lectures due to on-going fever. I am asking for a credit standing on my 2016 fall term and 2017 winter term grades. I was only able to handle stats 263 due to there were video lectures that I can watch on OnQ and do practice problems when I was not sick or in a bad mental state. The anatomy 216 was a lab and presentation-based course which I was able to go to the laboratory during weekends and study on specimens. All the other curses were based heavily on lecture materials which I missed or unable to concentrate during. I get to pass due to all the finals are a few weeks away from my last treatment, and I was able to recover from side effects and read the lecture notes or textbooks. My own way of dealing this incident is to not think about it as much as possible. Please do understand that writing this letter is hard for me because I have to describe the incident and what happened to me. I will never do this unless it is absolutely necessary, and this is why I waited till this point of time that I will not be able to get into my 4th-year sub-plan as biomedical science if I do not appeal for a credit standing on my second-year grades. I understand there is a deadline for academic appeals, and I am hoping that I can drop this deadline due to some of the difficulties I still face to recall this incident. Barbara Lotan helped me a lot during and after my treatments, and she is willing to write a support letter regarding the incident and my treatments after that. I will submit some of my medical records as part of the supporting documents, but please do not release any of the documents to public institutes or third parties. I am trying to maintain a good mental state during my third year, and I was able to concentrate more during classes especially during the winter term. I appreciate all the help I got from Queen's and Barbara, and hope this situation is understood.
