Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am Huidong (Calvin) Wang, a first-year undergraduate student of the Art Science faculty. I am here writing to request an appeal for the late registration of the course WRIT120 during summer 2018.
I have missed the due date for registering the course was mainly due to the following reasons: I am first year student in the school and I am not very familiar utilizing the school website, and the school curriculum for the summer break. Thus, I failed to learn about and focus on the summer courses deadlines. The time I came to know and focus on the summer courses was after the final exams because I spent my time mainly focusing on my winter term studies and didn't really plan for what I wish to do in the summer time. Another reason why I failed to meet the deadline for registration was because originally, I was planning on taking the courses CHEM 113 and CHEM 114, and to take the courses I was told that I had to wait for my final grades of CHEM 112 to register for the two courses, so I waited till the 12th for my final marks of the course. However, after that I found out that taking CHEM 113 and CHEM 114 was basically the same as taking CHEM 112. Hence, I decided to try and find other courses that I have interest to learn in the summer time. In the end I decided to choose the course of WRIT 120.
I have interest in science but my final grades in the first year for science are not satisfactory for me, so I plan to try to improve my fundamental knowledge during the summer time. The only reason why I didn't choose the other science courses of the summer 2018 was because it has already pasted half a month of May, so I have already missed over half of the classes for the courses in May. Thus, it would be ideal to take the courses in July. As for why I didn't choose any other courses is because of the problem of the final exam location. During the summer I am living in China and there are no exam locations in China for me to go to. Despite I could find a proctor, I don't really have many choices. While going to another country to take the exam is not quite reasonable for me. So, I choose not to go for those courses as well. Which lead me to have an eye on the WRIT120 course. During the time I spent in Queens I noticed that for one of the main reasons that I had bad grades in some of my courses were due to my insufficient writing skills. Therefore, I wish to register the course WRIT 120 to improve my writing, so that in the future I would be able to handle better for assignments such as course essays, PPTs, lab reports and so on.
With above reason I hope that this appeal will be approved so that I can register soon and get ready for the course.
Looking forward to hearing from you very soon and thank you in advance for your favorable consideration Wish you have wonderful summer time
Yours Truly,
Huidong (Calvin) Wang

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: The major that I am aiming to attend is chemistry and to do so I need to improve my fundamental knowledge in the related courses. So normally I should take the courses Physics and Computer science. However, because over half of the month has passed so that would be unlikely to do so, thus I plan on self-studying those courses and choose during the fall term of 2018. So instead for this summer courses I am going to choose the course WRIT 120. This decision is the result of the fact from the winter term I noticed that the main reason of my low grades was due to my lack in skills when it comes to writing. Therefore, it is important for me to improve my writing skills.
Because it is summer time and I am only registering for one course so unlike the fall and winter term I have more free time than usual. However, that does not make an excuse for me to be lazy. So, I mainly plan to act like it was during the fall and winter term, thou because I only have one course, so I would probably be only studying 3 hours per week for class time and 20-30 or more hours for outside class time studying. Because for the writing course only recommends spending 9-10 hours per week most of my studying time will be me self-studying science course that are related to my major, so I could be prepared for them next semester. Though, I won't spend the whole term studying I also plan on taking some part time jobs at the same time, so that I could also gain experience of how to work in a working place and how to interact with the society.
The main problem of my plan is my time management. Ever since I was young the problem of time management had always been a problem for me. It is very hard for to follow the schedule I make for every single day, due to my own laziness, and my inability to keep myself on task when I sit in a place for too long. To solve that problem there is nothing much what I can do but to try to maintain my control and focus on the task by performing certain measure such as locking my phone in another room when I am studying and working, unplugging the internet connection when I don't need it for studying, and so on. If I can manage to focus on my tasks, then I should have no problem with managing my time. I also worry that I may not have time for part time jobs during the time I have my course, so I am also considering spending the time before the course start to take part time jobs instead of the time during the course.
