Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

I am appealing for Credit Standing (CR) in COMM 221, NSCI 414, MICR 221, and EPID 301. The reason for which I am appealing for the above requests is because of mental health issues I have faced over the course of the Winter 2018 semester.

Issues with my mental health began to surface back in the Winter 2017 semester. My issues continued into the Fall 2017 semester but I managed to force myself to work and I managed a successful semester. I found November and December to be very difficult months for me. I was going to counselling sessions (with Lindsay Dupuis) at that point in hopes to find coping mechanisms with the problems I was facing. Following the Christmas Break, my mental health issues became more severe as I found myself unable to get out of bed and unable to do my work.

I went to seek the help of Dr. Billings at the LaSalle clinic on campus. She diagnosed me with Major Depressive Disorder and put me on medication to help me cope with my depression and anxiety. The initial adjustment phase was difficult and that forced me to defer certain midterms and assignments. I was still not my normal self and I still have not reached that state; however, I am seeing improvements. My studying abilities have been substantially decreased and it is not for a lack of trying. I have been studying for exams as I was before, if not more, but results have been less that favourable...

For this reason, I believe that the grades from the 4 classes I participated in Winter 2018 are not representative of who I am as a student. A combination of the initial diagnosis of depression, the start of the use of antidepressants, and the high-pressure environment of school, made studying and performing very difficult for me. I believe that has demonstrated itself in my grades this past semester.

I thank you for taking the time to read this appeal. I hope this clarifies what I have gone over the course of the year. As I have said before, I take pride in working hard and performing well in school and in life. I will not let my mental health take control of my life and I am seeing progress in my ability to cope with my problems. I know that I will be able to face any issues that come thanks to the support I am receiving. Please let me know if you have any questions or require any further information.

Regards,

Michael Yin
