Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Kailey Fisher (20022753) and I am respectfully appealing the decision that I must withdraw from Queens for one year based upon my academic standing, and that instead request that I remain on academic probation at Queen's.

I understand that the decision for requiring me to withdraw for a year is based upon the academic regulation to require students to achieve a cumulative GPA 1.6 when on academic probation, however, by the end of year two, my cumulative GPA is 1.4. My first year at Queens was an unexpectedly difficult year. I graduated from high school as an Ontario scholar and I came to Queens expecting to major in math and French. I struggled to adjust to university life and struggled in my courses, especially my math courses. The realization of impending failure in courses was something I had never known and caused me great anxiety and panic, and resulting grades significantly impacted my GPA. Despite seeking assistant from a 'Bounce Back' mentor, and a math tutor for my winter 2017 term, I finished first year with a GPA of 0.86 and was placed on academic probation. I remained undeclared for second year, but took courses to place me on track with hopes to declare a major in sociology.

This year was a much-improved academic experience. My grades have improved significantly, and I am much happier in the sociology courses than I previously was with math. My GPA's for second year were 2.13 and 1.93, which are both above the minimum 1.9 GPA that needs to be achieved for my program.

Considering the success that I have achieved in my second year of studies, I would be grateful to remain and continue with my studies and build upon the academic momentum I have achieved this year.

I appreciate your consideration of this appeal.

Sincerely,

Kailey

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My academic plan is to continue to pursue studies in the sociology department. I met with an academic advisor earlier this year, and we created a plan for the next steps in the program. I plan to take the remaining sociology courses I need to complete a major in sociology, and to keep it balanced by taking 3 courses of sociology each term, then taking electives to fill the remaining credits. I also am currently in a summer school class, and plan to enroll in a summer term again to make up for my missing credits from first year. If I need to take a fifth year in order to be successful with my studies, I will.

Documentation

Professional Letter Detail: Due to the fact that the circumstances of my appeal are based upon academic performance, I was informed that there would be no supporting documentation required
