Petition Letter: Dear office of the Associate Dean,
I am appealing for a credit standing in Biology 103, Physics 117 and chemistry 112 and for the potentially granted CR in Bio103 to act as a prerequisite for the biology or environmental biology major.
In my last year of high school (May, 2017) I re-tore my ACL and lateral meniscus. This was only 9 months after I had reconstructive surgery for my ACL and medial meniscus during the summer of 2016. These injuries were both related to high school sports. This injury is not only painful and requires approximately 6-9 months of recovery, but it is also emotionally strenuous. It caused extenuating emotional circumstances out of my control. I found out the day of my surgery during the February break. The knowledge of my surgery, along with trying to make it to the gym to three times per week to work on lower body strength (as mandated by my orthopaedic surgeon), coupled with the transition to University became extremely difficult throughout the school year. Not only did it affect my psychological state, but also it was physically painful. The pain from my knee made sleeping comfortably challenging, thus reducing my total amount of sleep. I did not preform to the best of my academic ability because of such psychological challenges and it has impeded my entrance into my desired program (Biology/environmental biology). I have undergone a second reconstructive surgery the week after I returned home (May 1st). The knowledge of my upcoming surgery during exam time caused unforeseen anxiety, and I believe it hindered my performance on my exams. I have a physiotherapy plan set in place to regain full use of my left knee. After speaking with an academic advisor, she advised me that my situation was grounds for a credit standing and I should consider filling for an academic appeal.
If this appeal were to be granted I believe it would greatly improve my academic success. With the stability of my knee not being a main concern next year, I will be able to focus more affectively on my studies and improve my academic standing. I will have an intense and focused plan at the gym this upcoming fall and will likely be visiting the physiotherapy clinic at the ARC.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: If my request for a CR were to be granted and I am eligible for admittance into my desired major of biology or environmental biology, I will work diligently to better my academic standing. I will do this by making use of the help offered by the TA's and extra material provided. I also intend to utilize more on campus resources such as the writing centre for lab reports and consider joining a peer study group.
If my request was excepted but I am unable to progress directly into my desired major, I will be in geology for my second year of studies. My goal in this case will be to transfer into bio or environmental biology by my third year. I will either retake BIO103 online in the fall or during the winter semester and enrol in prerequisite biology courses during the winter term. I will also enrol in applicable prerequisite and recommended bio courses over the summer so I don't fall behind and am able to graduate with the class of 2021. In addition, I will utilize all resources mentioned in the first paragraph.
Because my injury has been attended to, I will be able to focus the majority of my energies on my studies next year.
