To Whom It May Concern

Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a year.

Last year was my first year at Queen¿¿s and I had encountered some social issues in the beginning of the year. Those issues were mainly about making friends and blending into the environment. I was studying at Trinity College School for 2 years prior coming Queen¿¿s. I had no problem of making friends at all, but everything started to fall apart and change since coming to Queen¿¿s. I could not make friends and I started to isolate myself, which I did not talk about this problem to anyone throughout the year except in the beginning. In that conversation with my parents in the beginning of the school year, we all, including myself, believed this was just about getting used to the new environment, which will disappear soon and I, personally thought that I could handle it but turned out it had been bothering me on my academic performance underlyingly for the whole year. On the other hand, my mom underwent a surgery in October and I was really worried, which I did not want them to worry about me with the existing heavy stress back home in Hong Kong. So I did not really talk to them about it. Fortunately, my mom slowly got better with the help of medication till April 2018 when prescription ends. However, the whole atmosphere back at home was not so good in this whole year, along with my mom¿¿s surgery and my sister¿¿s multiple ankle injury. This problem and situation made me losing motivation and could not focus on studying, which directly affected my academic performance. The reason on why not dropping any courses was I did not want to give up and I believed I could do it. Also I was not aware how my emotion was affecting my performance. I did realized my academic levels were not that good comparing to my two years when I was at TCS, but I treated it as the difference between high school and university.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: For the future plans, if I would be granted a chance to go back to Queen's in Sept 2018, I would definitely retake the 3 courses that I had failed this time. Also, I would treasure and make good use of the chances of dropping courses if I find it difficult or not interesting in the first few classes. Then I would be able to choose easier and courses that suit me, which I will be able to enjoy the course and do well on it. In order to deal with my social issues, I would reach out for help such as QSAS and academic help in Dunning Hall. Back in the days, I was also neglecting all these resources, as I was isolating myself Also, I will acknowledge my social issues positively but not dividing myself anymore from family and all the help. I will open up to my parents more, talk to them more, Skype them more. With these circumstances, I knew I had disappointed them this time and I will do everything and reach out for help from now on if similar situation appears again. I understand this whole issue strongly links to self motivation, which is hard to list out resolutions; yet, I do believe that I have learnt a lesson from this and in order to stay motivated, I would set my own personal timetables. If motivation loses, I would go to the Arts and Science office and seek help, as a perspective from a third party would always be more convincing than someone close to you. Also, even though it might sound really old-schooled, I believe putting up some sentences can always remind me to be driven and treasure this second chance. Moreover, I will try going to the gym to pick up my old working out habit, hopefully it would help me to recover from my issues physically and mentally in long term.

I have attached a letter from my parents acknowledging that they are aware of the issue and the doctor¿¿s prove on my mom¿¿s medical issues.

I would really appreciate if I would be granted another chance to complement on my academic performance but most importantly establishing a good emotion returning to Queens in Sept 2018 if possible.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely
