Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (studies),

I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for one year. I am also appealing to have the following failed courses dropped: GPHY 229, HIST 209 (Winter 2014); DEVS 220, DEVS 340, HIST 498, RELS 326 (Fall 2014); DEVS 221, HIST 400 (Winter 2015); GPHY 351, HIST 449, WRIT 125 (Fall 2015); GNDS 312, HIST 400 (Winter 2016); DEVS 502, GNDS 212, HIST 242 (Fall 2016); IDIS 302, RELS 227 (Winter 2017); HIST 200, LAW 202 (Fall 2017); DRAM 303 (Winter 2018). I am unsure as to whether I can appeal theses courses in this same letter or if I need to do that separately, however, having as many as these courses dropped as possible is a part of my academic plan.¿¿ My academic performance has been greatly affected over the past few years because of my depression. I was first diagnosed with depression in 2014. Since then, I have been under the care of different doctors and therapists but unfortunately my treatment was inconsistent so I was unable to make real progress. This greatly affected my studies as I missed classes and had crippling anxiety surrounding handing in assignments. My academic success has been hindered by my mental illness in every semester since Winter 2014 as evidenced by my transcript. My mental illness has also impacted my ability to appeal my grades sooner. However, I am now on regular medication and am feeling positive about my current summer courses.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My plan moving forward has multiple elements. Firstly, I am planning to appeal to have the courses I¿¿ve failed over the years dropped. If those courses are removed from my transcript then my GPA will rise. Secondly, I am now planning to pursue a general degree in Global Development studies. This means that I have less courses to complete and I no longer need to fulfill the requirements of a history medial, making the completion of my studies much more manageable and realistic. As it stands, after my summer semester, I will only have 9.0 credits to complete which puts me well on track to graduate in Spring 2019. In addition to this, I will be asking my professors if it is possible for me to now finish the work of DEVS 240 and HIST 252 of Winter 2018 as I did do some of the coursework already. If this is granted, I would only have 3.0 credits to complete in the fall. Thirdly, I am now living at home where I can have regular help from family in managing my depression and consistent therapy and medication. This will provide me with stability so that I can focus on my studies and manage my time more effectively. It is really important to my ability to plan for my future that I do not have to wait an entire year to finish 1-3 courses in order to complete my general BA degree.
