Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Crow,

I am appealing to drop MUSC 171 (Summer 2018). This past March my father passed away and since then I have had an extremely difficult time keeping up with academics. Most days, it is an extremely difficult task to get out of bed, let alone keep up with assignments as well as a full-time job. I wanted to take two courses this summer so that I could take a reduced course load next year, so that I could keep up with my school work, extracurricular activities, and my part-time job. By June 1st, I felt confident that I could keep up with the assignments, but last week was an extremely difficult time for me. As last Sunday was father¿¿s day, I was basically incapable of thinking of anything else leading up to that time period and felt unfit to complete my work. As a result, I do not feel as though my mark in the course will reflect my academic capability. I would much prefer to retake the course in the fall when I can be completely immersed in a schoolwork environment. I have come to learn that I cannot decide when grief will affect me, some days I feel ready to take on challenges, and some days the thought of a challenge is too much to bear. Since my father¿¿s death, I have felt quite isolated as my mother is an alcoholic so I lack support. I have been trying to engage with my close friends surrounding my grief as much as I can, but I have come to realize now that I should seek other support ¿¿ potentially professional, as it would be more beneficial to my health to talk to someone with more experience. I never thought I would reach a point in my life where I would be writing one of these letters, as I take pride in my work ethic and punctuality. Growing up with two alcoholic parents, I have learned to isolate myself and not ask for help, as I was always taught that even by asking for it, I would not receive it. This is truly a wake-up call for me, and I do realize I can no longer go through life with that mindset. I truly believe that by seeking help throughout the 2018-2019 school year I will begin to succeed in school and finish my fourth and final year on a good note. I sincerely hope you are able to consider my request with compassion. Thank you so much for taking time to review my appeal.

Sincerely,

Karly Kamps
