Associate Dean (Studies),
Queen's University

Dear Associate Dean,

I am a first year student and am considering majoring in Chemistry. I would like to take PHAR 100 online this semester. When I had registered for my courses, I did not know it was an option for students to be able to take courses online and in class so had not initially seen this course. This morning, when I went to add PHAR 100 to my schedule it would not allow me. I made a third trip back to Dunning Hall to speak to the lady at the front and she told me I was too late, had missed the cut off, and that I should have known. I am appealing the Faculty's decision that I missed the cut off date to add this course to my schedule.

I had initially signed up for PSYC 100 and very quickly realizing that this would not be beneficial for the field I am considering, I dropped out and went to Dunning Hall to ask for advice on what I could take instead. I was advised that GEOL 106 would be a good class for me. Because of the timing, I had just missed the class, and as the next class is not scheduled until next Monday I received slides from a student so that I could catch up. Very quickly, upon reviewing the slides I was wondering if I made a mistake adding this class and I was increasingly aware that the cut off date was close.

Yesterday I went back to the advisor as I needed more guidance and she advised me and told me that I had until September 19 to drop and add a class without financial penalty, but that I still had a couple weeks to drop and add a class, but with penalty. I had been so focused on figuring things in my mind and waiting for my turn that I did not pay attention to any signs and notifications on walls that may have said otherwise. So with the information I was given by the advisor, I finally ended up making the absolute last minute decision to drop GEOL 106, while all along considering my options for an alternate elective. After sleeping on it, this morning I decided that PHAR 100 is that course I need to take as I am considering majoring in Chemistry and this would align with my future and possible career choices.

I am so sorry, I am still working on finding my way around the University and learning rules and processes, and in this case with the information that I was provided, there was a sincere misunderstanding on my side.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

Chloe Wheeler

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I was told the appeal process could take up to a week and to ensure that I will not fall further behind, I have a friend who is in this class at the moment and she has offered to help me in any way she can, as well as provide me with all the course notes and assignments. I would work through this and the assignments as though I was in the class. Doing this would make me feel more prepared as well as take the stress off me in the event you would allow me to take this course. In addition, my neighbour (a fourth year student) has taken the class and has made herself available in the event that I may need her help.
