Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean, Student Services,

I am appealing to drop DEVS 497 (Fall, 2014). I have struggled in the course and am unlikely to pass it with the way things have been going. Instead I would like to take an additional fourth year DEVS seminar in the winter semester to make up for the credits I would lose dropping this course.

Over the past several years I have struggled with an anxiety disorder. I have seen counsellors at HCDS here at Queen's several times and have been seeing a counsellor at KC3 Community Counselling in downtown Kingston as a more long-term situation. In the past month and a half I have had several panic attacks and have utilized the emergency counselling appointments available at HCDS. This semester has been particularly difficult to deal with the anxiety, as I am busier than I have ever been. I am in my fourth years and, in addition to my classes I am the Head Tour Guide at for Queen's Campus Tours. I love what I am doing however it has been a struggle to maintain my usual academic performance and control my anxiety with all that has been going on. I am seeing counsellors on an ongoing basis and am taking medication to help to control my anxiety however I feel that it would help very much to be able to drop DEVS 497, as it is my most academically demanding course and the one that has caused me the most anxiety.

In the event of this appeal being granted, as mentioned above I plan on taking an additional fourth year DEVS seminar in the 2015 winter semester so as to graduate on time. Fortunately I have taken a few summer courses and I currently only need 15 credits in my winter semester. If this appeal were to be granted, I would add another course and still only have four courses, which I believe would be manageable. My biggest goal is to graduate on time in the spring of 2015 and I sincerely hope to be able to accomplish that.

In addition to my academic strategy I will continue to see my regular counsellor at KC3 Community Counselling Centre to work on keeping my anxiety under control. I will also continue with my current medication until my doctor at HCDS recommends otherwise. I have an appointment set up at HCDS in two weeks from now to check in with the medication that I am currently taking.

Currently the documentation that I am providing are letters of reference from Andre Deparolis, Special Events and Campus Tours Coordinator and Kellie Meacher, Communication Manager, both of whom work for Queen's Undergraduate Admission and Recruitment. I have a meeting with one of the counsellors, Julia Armstrong at HCDS on Monday morning and I have already spoken with the counsellors that I have seen at HCDS and they have told me that they will provide a letter supporting my appeal. Her letter will be forthcoming.
Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Annie Rankmore
