Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am appealing to have some courses from the school year of Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 altered on my transcript. The reason I am appealing now rather than at the end of term is because I was overwhelmed with anxiety at the time and unable to advocate for myself. Now that I have had some time to separate myself from the cause of my extenuating circumstances, I am finally realizing what help I needed. I thought that in second semester I would be able to handle a full semester but events from first semester as detailed below prevented me from preforming at my best.

I am requesting to appeal for credit standing in courses GEOL 104 and MATH 221 taken in the Fall of 2017. As well as, a late drop for courses MATH 111,MATH 225 and Phys 239 taken in Winter 2018 semester.

The severity of my extenuating circumstances can be substantiated by the documentation provided last fall detailing parental abuse on the levels of physical, emotional and financial. I was forced to move out of my house and on my own mid-semester because my mother was mentally and physically unwell and attempted to threaten me into paying our rent so as to not be evicted. At this point internet, cable and power were already being shut off and I decided to find somewhere more safe to live.

As you can imagine this transition was difficult, I did not become truly settled in a new home until well after the new year.I was constantly bothered by an irrational fear of my mother finding where I lived and had to have police escort me to collect my belongings. Despite working hard to focus on my new semester I was unaware that the new feelings of anxiety and uneasiness I was feeling, would lead to physical sickness such as strep throat and other colds that would affect my performance throughout the semester. My medical records at queens can detail these sicknesses and substantiate my claims.

As you can see, I underestimated the amount of help I needed to repair the semester and I am now reaching out and seeking counseling to prevent having this happen again.Additionally, this semester Fall 2018, I am taking a reduced course load to focus on my grades and course material.
