Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to you in an attempt to explain why I am currently in such a position where I am asking to possibly petition to have this course dropped or, if any way possible, have an opportunity to redeem myself and my overall grade in this course, SOCY 210. Currently, I am in an unfortunate position where I legitimately cannot afford to fail a course or drop said course. This past year has been quite tough and trying for my family and I. As a result of familial, financial, and health issues, the severity of my anxiety has harshly increased and my academics have been adversely affected. Recently, certain familial issues worsened and are now being dealt with in the courts, thus as a result of dealing with lawyers and certain family members, while being enrolled in five courses this semester, I have become increasingly stressed. Additionally, after being disowned by family, I have been left with very few familial ties, not trust/very little financial support (forcing me to find a job), and unhealthily high levels of anxiety. I have been doing my very best trying to make everything work for the time being, but have seemingly so fallen behind in this course while juggling my current family, legal, and financial issues. I cannot afford to do poorly at this time. I know what kind of student I am, aside from these recent adversities, and I don¿¿t want this course tarnishing my academic repute. I have been adjusting accordingly and am improving on dealing with everything that is going on. More specifically, I have kept up with attending all of the lectures and have been studying my hardest for these quizzes, but at this time, there are too many things going on, and I¿¿m just trying to stay afloat.

Furthermore, I am appealing to drop this course after the course drop date, because of my poor performance at this time. I cannot afford to drop a course, but would rather do so instead of receiving a failing grade in a course I know I can succeed in. I would still very much like to pursue majoring in sociology, and look forward to re-taking this course whenever it is offered next. With this being said, after meeting with academic advising and seeking assistance at this time, I am well aware that I can still pursue sociology by taking an assortment of other courses, as SOCY 210 is not a prerequisite for the courses I am currently enrolled in this term or the Winter 2015 term. For future reference, I have become quite knowledgeable on the many resources at Queen¿¿s University. I will be more mindful of course drop dates and course requirements. With this said, I did not intend on dropping the course before or on the outlined drop date because at that time I had little knowledge of my performance. It wasn¿¿t until after the drop date, that did I receive my test grade that determined where I sat in SOCY 210. I didn¿¿t do as well as I thought I would do on this test. Afterwards, I weighed my options and sought out academic advising for assistance in determining how I could go about avoiding getting a failing grade on my transcript. With everything that is and has been going on in within my family, I regret not having been more aware of the services that the school provides for its students. However, I know what kind of student I am, and I refuse to let certain personal circumstances define me or tarnish my academic merit. I work hard at everything I do and I shall learn from these hardships to continue achieving excellence at Queen¿¿s University.

Regards,

Madison Peter
