Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop HLTH 334 (Fall, 2018).
I sustained a head injury on Friday, October 12th. I continued with studying and doing my assignments until I realized that my headache was getting worse. I went to the Hotel Dieu Hospital on Monday, October 15th. Where the doctor informed me that I had a concussion and in hopes that my symptoms resolved in 1-2 weeks that I should be resting and take a break from studying and assignments.
In May 2015 - July 2017 I had a very serious concussion and saw many specialists due to the severity. This injury had a huge impact on my life and even though the concussion that I am experiencing now is not as serious, the symptoms experienced have been heightened due to my past. I saw out help as my headache and symptoms were not improving. I started seeing Natasha DeGroote, an occupational therapist at student wellness. She helped me receive accommodations for assignments and worked with me on symptom recognition and mental check-ins. As my symptoms were still persisting, she recommended me to see Dr. O¿¿Connor at the Queen¿¿s Therapy Zone. Dr. O¿¿Connor started me on 10mg of Amitriptyline to reduce pain and recommended that I lighten my course load in order to finish the semester. His letter of documentation is included in my appeal.
I chose to drop HLTH 334 because before my concussion I had only completed 14 of marks for the course. The grading was 24 participation, a 25 exam or essay and a 25 presentation all that fell after my head injury. Professor L.F Carver was extremely accommodating but I felt that since this was the course with the most of my grade that I had yet to complete it would be best that I dropped this course in order to lighten my course load.
For my degree, I must take either HLTH 334 or HLTH 333. I will be retaking HLTH 334 next year if possible and if not will enroll in HLTH 333. For next semester if my symptoms still persist, I will be having cognitive physiotherapy in order to proceed to do well at Queen¿¿s. I will also be working with the adaptive technologists here at Queen¿¿s to allow myself to achieve my highest potential while dealing with my concussion.
