Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Arts and Science,

I am appealing to drop CISC 422, Formal Methods in Software Engineering, Fall 2018 course. This is an elective course and is not required for me to graduate.

This semester has been particularly stressful for me as it is my final semester at Queen's University and I have been greatly struggling with what I am doing with my future. The first 8 weeks of the Fall 2018 semester led me to develop extreme anxiety about my future and distress, causing me to lose track of assignments and falling behind in coursework in CISC 422 due to either being too in distress to keep up with schoolwork, or my energy being spent on finding ways to manage this anxiety. While the grades in my other courses are also not my best, I prioritize my other courses over CISC 422 due to it being an elective course, and not needed to graduate from my program.

This circumstance led me to seek both a mental health evaluation at LaSalle for the first time, as well as counselling with both a mental health counsellor and academic counsellor at Queen's. After these initial appointments I have created follow up appointments but will not be seen until mid-December after exams, and in January. These appointments have greatly helped my mental health by giving me solutions and options to deal with the circumstance.

I will continue to see my counsellors as well as make follow up appointments at LaSalle to better manage my mental health. I have 3 appointments booked but unfortunately the earliest days available are over 4 weeks from my initial appointment. I have taken the steps to consult with an academic advisor. CISC 422 is an elective course and I will not need to retake it to graduate.

Best,

Brooke Resendes
