Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,
I am requesting an appeal for my summer class of the condensed of Psychology 100. I will begin with some background information. I am currently a father of 3 and work full time in Law enforcement. I am attempting completing a distance program for the BA in Psychology.
During the first half of the summer months I had been very busy with work, being in law enforcement my shifts run 12 hours days and nights and often with court or other investigations it can lead on into 16-18 hour shifts. On top of this, my wife and I welcomed the birth of our 3 child. At that time my focus on my program was not my top priority. I completed the midterm exam, and I believed I did not complete it with my best effort forward; however I suspected I had enough to pass. As the June drop deadline past, we had not received our marks, and I was not entirely sure how I completed my exam and stuck around to wait for the result.
As I am a distance learner, my exam results take significantly longer to reach me than that of a regular student. Once receiving my mark and learning was around 40 I was discouraged due to the poor result and the drop deadline had past.
I continued on with the second half of the semester completing all my assignments and was able to participate and study quite well. I believed I was doing well, although still receiving 60-70 on my assignments, I suspected due to the many years of Police report writing is allot different than academic style of writing.
Preparing for the final exam, I studied and took notes as I would for any test that I take. I wrote the final exam in an office room at the Orillia City Hall, which I thought was different, because all previous exams I have written were either written at Georgian College or Lakehead University which are also in Orillia. During the exam, I was in a closed room in an office and was able to hear 3 or 4 workers talking on the telephone, chatting and shredding paper. I completed the exam with little time remaining to the exam proctor. The proctor made me fill out a comments card, which I wrote my concerns on regarding the loud chatter and noises.
Patiently waiting my results for the exam, I received them the last week of August; again 2 weeks after other students received their grade. Once receiving my mark I realized that I was just over 2 marks short that I needed to make up for my failure during the first half of the exam. It was at that point I requested a copy of my exam to review as I believed I did quite well when I wrote it.
After reviewing my exam I believed I was short credited around 3.5 marks. I again asked for a review as I was able to pinpoint items taught from learning material in my responses but wasn¿¿t credited, and it was passed along to the Professor whom I spoke to via email. The response I received deflected my protest of entitlement to my poor mark in my midterm. I had explained the situation to Dr. Norris as well as the exam location and she forwarded me to write an appeal.
Due to the fact I am doing 1 course a semester, I was unable to continue into the fall semester due to the delays of responses from the Psychology department. I had asked for a re-examination much earlier in the process and as it stands I am sitting 1.8 marks short of receiving a passing examination which would make my course mark 62.
I would like to continue my education and I hope that you take into consideration the events that took place during this summer that may have affected my ability write effectively in my examinations and it put me at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the class and that a late drop out is warranted.
