I am appealing to drop a course after the final date of October 31st, due to extenuating circumstances. The fall 2014 course that I am appealing to drop is Classics 201 History of Rome (CLST 201) taught by Professor Bernard Kavanagh. I am appealing to drop this course due to two reasons, the first being poor health in the beginning of the year, and the second being an attempted robbery that took place in my home, the afternoon prior to writing the exam.
In the late weeks of September I began to feel sick, as my health slowly declined I decided to see a doctor. I went to the doctor and acquired a doctor's note on October 2nd 2014, and was as diagnosed with a chest infection that lasted over 3 weeks. It required two medications, plus one steroid puffer to clear up the illness. I was bed ridden, coughing so violently it would induce vomiting at times. I was unable to attend all of my lectures, and fell behind in my work. I was given the opportunity to write an essay to compensate for missing the first midterm, but was too unwell to study for it. After missing the first midterm, the following midterm and final exam's weights were altered to 50 each. Please note that I have included a copy of the doctor's note.
The second midterm for Classics 201 took place on November 4th. Up until this date, due to my poor health I had no marks reflecting how I was performing in this course. I was at home preparing to write the exam. I walked to the livingroom/front hall of my house, and I walked right into and startled a burglar. He was in the midst of robbing my house that I share with my roommates. I chased him outside, there was an altercation, and then the robber ran off. This incident to be very frightening and distracting. After calling the police they came, took my statement and a description of the burglar. The case number for the Kingston Police for this incident is 14-34201. Please note that I have included a copy of the police report as well.
For future plans, I have taken my flu-shot and hope to avoid any and all illnesses this coming winter. In regards to the robbery, I have spoken to all of my housemates about locking the doors to the house properly, as well as always trying to have someone home at all times. I hope to continue onto next semester and be able to speak to guidance counselors when need be to discuss my future academic plans on an ongoing basis.
As I have made every attempt to pass this 50 midterm, I unfortunately failed the midterm, and am severely concerned with my current grade in the course, as well as with my overall GPA. Seeing that I faced both poor health at the beginning of the year, and an attempted robbery on the day of my exam, I respectfully request that I may drop Classics 201.
