Dr Benard,
I am appealing to the Faculty of Arts and Science to drop HIST 263 (online). I am enrolled in this course via a letter of permission from Brock University where I am a full-time third-year student. I would ask that I be granted this appeal based on compassionate and medical grounds.
Until mid-October I was on track with this online course, completing my assignments and participating in the online forum. However from that point the pending death of my grandmother led to a build up of anxiety and her ultimate passing on October 20th triggered a period of extreme grief and severe anxiety. I have an official diagnosis of both ADD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, supporting paperwork for which is on file with Student Accessibility Services at Brock University. Following the death of my grandmother I spiraled into a period of extreme anxiety, isolation, and denial, withdrawing from interaction, including online. I was not attending my seminars and lectures at Brock University and was unable to keep up to date with my online course. As a result I have failed to complete the necessary assignments and online forum posts required for the HIST 263 course.
At the end of the term, upon returning home I sought help from both my parents and healthcare professionals, while also consulting with my caseworker at Brock University to resolve the scholastic issues my grief and mental health condition have created. Moving forward I will be receiving both grief counseling and therapy for my anxiety. I am hoping to further develop my existing strategies and problem solving techniques for dealing with my anxiety.
I propose to retake the HIST 263 course again in September 2019 if it is offered.
I appreciate your consideration of my appeal.
Sincerely,
Maxwell Scholbeck
