Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop HLTH101 and HLTH237 past the academic deadline due to extenuating health circumstances I experienced this fall semester. I became extremely unwell unexpectedly in early October, and continued to be so until the end of December/early January. Due to these unexpected circumstances beyond my control, my academic performance suffered greatly. I underwent surgery in the beginning of November due to my illness and had a longer recovery period than expected, which affected my academic performance extremely negatively. Due to being so unwell, starting in October, I became unable to attend the majority of my lectures, and therefore was unable to keep up with the course material at the level that was expected of me. As the semester continued, I tried keeping up to the best of my abilities, and completed as much work as I could. I was originally granted extensions on my late assignments, but those extensions were retracted shortly after due to conflicting opinions about deadlines, rendering me unable to submit the assignments I had been working hard to complete. I would love to be granted the opportunity to retake these courses in the near future without having undeserved fails on my transcript.

I came back to Queens this past summer after taking over a year off to work and save up to finish my degree, and have been incredibly dedicated to my courses. This can be seen in the grades I achieved in my summer courses, as well as in the marks I received in both my assignments and tests in the courses I have been given the opportunity to complete still from the fall semester. My current only goal is to complete my degree, and to do extremely well in my classes each semester, and due to circumstances out of my control, I have been unable to meet that goal this semester. I have not only invested a significant amount of my own money, and additionally taken out loans to complete this degree, but I am investing all of my time and effort to make myself proud and graduate. If it had been in my control, I would have completed all of my fall term classes with the grades I know I can achieve. Unfortunately, I was unable to do so, and I would be beyond grateful for the opportunity to drop these two classes from my transcript and complete them again next year, and work hard to receive the grades I originally intended to.

Sincerely,

Sarah Rack
