Dear Associate Dean (Psychology),
I am appealing to waive the 21day appeals deadline. The reason for this (as explained below), is that after contracting Lyme Disease in May (2014) and being hospitalized in August for resulting heart complications, I found myself too unwell for months to resume my studies or to commence an appeals process. I am doing so now, and hope to resume courses with Queens in January.
I would like to be granted permission to drop 3 summer courses, (Psyc 235, Psyc 370, & Psyc 397), taken this past June- August 2014, and to be fully reimbursed for the courses. I would like to have them removed from my record entirely.
This past May 2014, I contracted Lyme Disease. The condition unfortunately was not diagnosed until July 31st, at which time I was admitted to intensive care at the South Shore Regional Hospital (NS), with Lyme Carditis. I had a very severe case of developing Lyme Disease which resulted in problems with the electrical functioning of my heart. I was kept in ICU for 7 days on heart monitors and treated for Lyme Disease, after which time I began to recover and was allowed to return home. My doctors said I was extremely lucky not to have needed a pacemaker or to have incurred permanent health damage It was incredible.
The recovery period for this condition was not immediate, but a lengthy process. Even after hospital treatment I experienced major joint pain, and what felt like extreme arthritis and exhaustion for many weeks. I've also had multiple specialist appointments and continued heart-monitoring by a cardiologist. As of October 22, I believe I can officially say I'm fully recovered. Prior to this, I have not been well enough to write the missed exams or to reengage in classes.
Although Queens has been more than accommodating, and has offered to let me write the 3 missed exams in December, too much time has passed since the courses have ended, and I feel it would be overwhelming to begin learning the material again from scratch. I would prefer to simply re-take the courses.
