Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing this letter to appeal my final grade in both PSYC202 and PSYC205 in hopes to receive a credit standing on my final transcript.
During the fall semester of my second year of undergraduate studies, I was sexually assaulted. This event significantly affected my academic performance, especially in my statistics (PSYC202) and comparative cognition courses (PSYC205). I was assaulted on homecoming weekend and went on to write a heavily weighted midterm in PSYC 205 the following Monday and another in PSYC202 in the upcoming weeks. I was in no mental state or physical condition to write the exams and received a failing grade on both as a result. The individual who assaulted me also happened to be in my same year and program, and was enrolled in both of these courses which made me feel unsafe in my class environment. My other courses, though effected, did not end up being as greatly impacted since there were online modules to aid in course material. These courses also had more take-home assignment that were assigned early so I was able to work on them at a slower pace from home. After I was sexually assaulted my mental health quickly started to deteriorate, as I internalized a great deal of shame and guilt, and the emotional impact significantly interfered with my daily functioning. I felt that my sense of safety had been violated and felt very unsafe on campus. This made it extremely difficult for me to attend classes and to put the usual amount of effort into my course work as I typically would have. I did not fully process or properly deal with the full extent of my sexual trauma till months after it occurred and am still working to overcome what happened. At the time of the incident I did not know the resources available to me or my options in regards to any form of academic consideration. Had I known then what I know now, I would have made it a priority to look into and take immediate action in terms of academic consideration or grievances. However, I opened up to a trusted adult during second semester and started receiving professional help which has resulted in a steady increase in my grades.
In the future, I plan to continue seeing my counsellor to make sure all aspects of my overall health are in an optimal condition for me to succeed both academically and otherwise. I also plan to continue on the academic track I am currently on and to continue working on both my personal and academic success.
Sincerely,
Jennifer McNeil
