To: The Associate Dean of Studies at Queen¿¿s University,
a) I am writing this letter of appeal in order to drop FREN118 (Winter, 2019)(Online).
b) During the past five weeks I have endured extenuating circumstances that have severely affected my mental health and as a result, have subsequently debilitated my ability to perform academically. In early-mid February I underwent a trauma which has since directly impacted my ability to manage schoolwork. During the following weeks of the incident, I immediately sought out counseling from a counselor at Queen¿¿s University in hopes to counter the impact of these effects. Despite these steps to try to manage both my schoolwork and mental illness, the overwhelming stress of this trauma hindered my ability to manage the course load and structure of FREN118.
This was in part due to my learning disabilities, which already put me at a severe disadvantage in contending with the online structure of FRENCH118. I have attached supporting documentation from the Accessibility Services at Queen¿¿s outlining my accommodations and learning disabilities below. As a very hard working student, under normal circumstances I would be able to succeed despite these structural challenges within the course. However, due to the severe impact of this trauma, the combination of my altered mental state and learning disabilities has made this practically impossible. This effect can be exemplified through the timeline of the past five weeks, where after undergoing this trauma my academic performance in FRENCH118 immediately and severely declined.
During the past five weeks I have focused my attention and mental strength on completing the three remaining courses that I am enrolled in. Though, for the reasons listed above I am not able to manage or perform at my normal academic level within FRENCH118. As someone who has endured extenuating circumstances I do not believe that my altered performance in this course is an accurate or fair reflection of my capabilities as a student. For these reasons I am appealing to drop FREN118.
c) Looking towards the future I plan to continue with counseling and to manage a less overwhelming course load next year. A way I plan to accomplish this is through selecting an elective that is offered in-person, during the Fall 2019 semester. I would like to thank the Associate Dean of Studies at Queen¿¿s University for taking the time to look over this appeal.
