Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop MUTH 231 (Winter, 2019) and LLCU 326 (Winter, 2019) as well as for Credit Standing in HIST 210 (Fall, 2018) and HIST 442 (Fall, 2018). Below, I will explain how the extenuating circumstances beyond my control (verified in the attached form from Queen¿¿s Interfaith Chaplain, Kate Johnson) affected these courses and justify my requests, as well as my plan going forward.
I have academic accommodations for this term and had them last term as well due to a combination of multiple family problems/illnesses and my own mental illness. In February 2018, my partner¿¿s father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and my partner continues to require a great deal of support from me in coping with his father¿¿s illness. Then, in April 2018, my father very suddenly left our family and my maternal grandfather was shortly thereafter diagnosed with terminal cancer, so I have been supporting my mother and disabled brother through this. The mountain of stress all of these events has caused exacerbated my Major Depression and severe anxiety, which placed additional challenges for me to face this academic year. These events began occurring last February but impacted my work most severely from September 2018 to today, and I anticipate that they will continue to impact me going forward. These circumstances have greatly affected my ability to attend class and often my ability to submit assignments on time.
For MUTH 231, I am currently unable to pass as it is heavily focused on participation and due to my circumstances, I have been unable to attend this class as of yet. In my correspondence with the professor, he advised that I drop the course and stated that he would support a late drop. Similarly, my struggles with attendance have severely impacted my grades in LLCU 326. As of this point, I have only attended 2 classes and have missed a test. Due to the huge participation portion of these courses and the professors¿¿ inability to reduce this in accommodations (as it is an essential part of the course), I believe that the extenuating circumstances out of my control have thus far too greatly impacted my grade for me to continue with them.
I am further requesting Credit Standing in HIST 210 and HIST 442 as while I was able to pass these courses last term, my extenuating circumstances significantly impacted my grade. For HIST 210, where I earned a D-, I was unable to complete a paper in the course due the circumstances I was dealing with (and continue to deal with). In HIST 442, my grade suffered greatly as my term paper was rushed (and therefore not up to par) due to my extenuating circumstances, and my participation grade was likewise affected, so I ultimately ended up with a C-. During the past two years, I have consistently earned around a B, which I believe clearly shows that my extenuating circumstances severely impacted my final grades last term.
As I am graduating this spring, my future plans centre on finishing the term. Fortunately, for my remaining two courses this term, HIST 401 (Northwest Fur Trade) and HIST 499 my professors have been able to support me with accommodations that allow me to meet the course requirements but also accommodate for when I cannot make it to class or when I fall behind on classwork. I am incredibly appreciative for their support in this and am working very hard to meet the requirements. I am also finishing up a course from the Fall 2018 term (HIST 365, which I currently have an IN in) in which I need to do approximately 8 more hours of work and is due by April 30th, which is highly attainable for me. By dropping MUTH 231 and LLCU 326, which I cannot at this point pass, it will give me the time to focus on my remaining two courses and the final project from HIST 365. I will also continue to seek support from the Chaplain as well as residence-based supports (as I live in residence) in order to continue to work on my ability to cope with the challenges I am presently facing.
