Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Ceresa van Lieshout and I am in my final semester of a Computer Science honors bachelor degree at Queen's University. I am requesting for an extension on my deferred stats 263 exam. I took this course in the winter semester of 2015. Unfortunately, in March of 2015, my mom suffered from a sudden ruptured brain aneurysm and had to be admitted to the ICU. This was a very difficult event for me and had many repercussions in my life afterward. If you look at my records, there are a number of appeals regarding the extension of this stats 263 exam in relation to my mother's condition and its effects on me. I was meant to write the deferred exam in January 2016, however, I had a miscommunication with the professor. I was under the impression that Professor Moleson would provide me with a date for the exam but he was waiting for me to choose the date. At the time, I was very overwhelmed and didn't catch the misunderstanding in time which resulted in me not taking the exam. Since then, I have experienced a very low point mental health wise which has been preventing me from dealing with serious school matters. I had trouble feeling comfortable approaching the right people for help and didn't have enough energy in me to push through this.
I am currently expected to graduate this April 2019 and to do so, I would need to complete the stats 263 exam. Unfortunately, I do not have the funds to re-take this course again but I am confident that I will be prepared to write this exam. I am very fortunate to have the support from my counselor at Queen's, who has been helping me deal with my family and mental health issues and I have written permission from the Stats 263 Professor Charles Molson to take the exam at any time this year. Professor Molson informed me that the course hasn't changed much since the time I took it in Winter 2015 and provided me all the study materials I need to succeed in this course. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to complete this course and finally, be able to graduate this year and continue to pursue my future career goals.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
