Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of (Studies),

My name is Rhys Adams, I am in my first year of concurrent education. I am appealing to faculty decision that for aegrotat status for the following courses I an enrolled in this semester: GPHY 101, PYSC 100, HIST 121, DEVS 100B, and SPAN 111 due to medical circumstances.

Due to extenuating circumstances, I am required to have a surgery the week of April 8th. This surgery timing is beyond my control and cannot be moved as it would cause further risk to my health. The timing of the surgery is the same week as my final exams. The physical recovery of the surgery will last at least two weeks and the emotional impact will be a longer recovery time. Currently, I am struggling with fear and anxiety, which is impacting my ability to focus and study. As of right now I am doing extremely well in all of my classes. I have high marks as well as attend every lecture and participate thoroughly in all of my classes. However, this circumstance puts the grades that I have worked hard for in jeopardy due to mental and physical recovery from this surgery. The classes listed are the only classes I have exams in, so they are the only classes that I need aegrotat status. I have completed every piece of coursework in all of my classes beside the final exam for the listed courses. It has been recommended by my counselling appointment as well as the healthcare professionals responsible for my surgery that I under no circumstances attempt to take final exams with the stress I will be enduring from my surgery. They recommend that I apply for aegrotat status as the best option because postponing my exams would still add to my mental stress. I am a dedicated student and although my anxiety that drives myself to do well in my grades has good results, prolonging the stress of taking exams later on in the year would add to my stress as it would be in the back of my mind. I have counselling appointments that I have booked with student health services to ensure I am working towards healing. The impact of my surgery will give me severe mental challenges that I will take steps to overcome in time. However, because of the surgery timing taking the final exams in these courses would only risk my current high grades. For future steps I plan to continue counselling as well as follow the advice of my doctors strictly for optimal recovery.

Medical Counselling Documents are attached to this letter.

Thank you for your consideration.
Rhys Adams
