Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to drop RELS 229.
During the drop period, I was experiencing a downturn of my mental health. I was previously diagnosed with depression, and my symptoms are normally well managed with medication. However, when experiencing this more severe episode of depression, medication was not sufficient to allow me to complete my everyday tasks. In fact, I did not leave my house other than the occasional class for over a month, and certainly did not complete any assignments. This lasted between the end of January to mid March. When I finally began to feel like myself again, I explained these circumstances to Academic Considerations. They granted me a Verification of Personal Health Condition form which explained the impact of this illness on my ability to attend class, complete assignments on time, and so on was serious. I began to negotiate with my professors for what grades I could earn handing in assignments late.
My other professors have allowed me to continue to hand in assignments with a lessened lateness penalty, but my professor for RELS 229 is unwilling to do so. Unfortunately, this lateness penalty as set out in the syllabus involves an initial 10 deduction, with a 1 deduction each day following. For one assignment in particular, this involves a deduction of 52, with others being less severe but still difficult to achieve. I have tried to compromise, but this has proved unsuccessful. I left a message with an Academic Accommodation Counsellor in regards to this, but due to the busyness of this time of year I have yet to hear back.
As it is my final semester at Queen's, my future plan will not be able to involve taking this class again at a later date. In the fall I will be entering my first year of teacher's college at Lakehead University. However, in order to keep this acceptance, I am not permitted to fail any of my current courses. I would obviously like to keep my acceptance. Honestly, I am unsure if my circumstances qualify for the granting of this appeal, but I have run out of options, and figured it couldn't hurt to try.
On a more general note, when attending Lakehead, I will ensure that I promptly register with the Accommodations Office. I have not done this at Queen's, and wish to have a support system in place if my mental health takes another downswing.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration,
Shelby LaTour
