Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Faculty of Arts and Science:
My name is Yinuo An, the first year student who is studying computer science. I am appealing to drop MATH 121- Calculus Online-FW18/19 due to outside issue of social environment¿¿ my grandpa¿¿s illness and my mental issues.

I am an international student and my whole family live in China. I feel so lonely in Canada so we have to communicate with each other via Skype everyday. I am struggling to take on two identities, a student at Queen¿¿s mastering english, making friends and learning how to adult on my own. My support system has been struggling in China and I have had to help take on some of the burdens they are experiencing. When my parents had fight with each other, my young brother called me at 2:00 am (time zone different) because he did not know what he should do. I am struggling to manage both Canadian school life as well as managing family issues. The social norms are different in both areas and my mental health has suffered because of the divide I¿¿ve had to experience.

I have a roommate who helps me but also struggles with mental health issues and I am a support for her many ways which is also stressful. I can¿¿t seem to ¿¿get a break¿ and find myself sleeping a lot or eating a lot because I feel overwhelmed. My parents have depression and anxiety for more than 10 years, so I plan to meet with student wellness to consider accommodations and also look into possible mental health issues but in the mean time the math course has been too much added stress for me to maintain because it is a two-terms course.

I am struggle to communicate my feeling sometimes and when I need help with issues on campus, the language barrier forces me into more isolation and often isn¿¿t supported with staff. I am considering changing majors and haven¿¿t been able to figure out my options on my own and am overwhelmed at this point. For example, last week, I asked them ¿¿As an international student, if I take one online course, can I still work full time during summer or I can only work for 20 hours per week¿ I went to the Arts & Science Office first but they said they did not know and I should asked the Arts & Science Online because they were more professional, so I went to the Arts & Science Online Office but they asked me to go to International student centre because they only dealing with technologic problem, however when I went to the International Centre they said that I should asked the arts and science department. I felt so stressful and helpless, I just wanted to cry and die.

Last week my dad told me that my grandpa (70-years-old) is suffering from a serious illness and staying in the hospital which makes me heart-broken. My grandpa is the kindest guy in the world who taught me how nice the world is. I did not intend on leaving Canada but had struggled mentally and alone for the past semester while my family calls me to tell me the details of the events in China. I am worrying about him so much so I want to go back to China for few weeks. I am worried that I will miss the final of MATH 121 so that is why I have to appeal this course.

My student number is 20103471.

Thank you

Yinuo An
