Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I'm appealing to drop these courses due to the fact that I was unable to preform as a result of an ongoing diagnosed mental health issue which I have already informed Queen's QSAS about. My disability has been an obstacle since the beginning of the year, causing me to miss many of my classes in the first semester, however up until the break it felt manageable. It was only after second semester had begun where I really felt as though it was inhibiting my ability to achieve, as I was unable to get out of bed for about a month and a half of the year, starting approximately one quarter through February and lasting until the end of March.
After this stretch I immediately sought help from a professional as I knew something was wrong, as well as talked to my parents about what was going on. I abruptly went home to see my paediatrician who finally gave me a diagnosis. I've already obtained a psychotherapist to help me moving forward and talked to an academic advisor on what they believed my best options were at this point, where they recommended I appealed to drop my courses late so that I could have a fresh start next year. We have also gotten a recommendation for a psychiatrist in Toronto from my doctor so that I may receive help over the summer and return to school in my best possible condition.
Due to this stretch of time where I was unable to do anything at all, I missed numerous assignments and tests to the point where I now have a very minimal chance of passing my classes, and even if I were to write my exams and get as high a mark as possible I still wouldn't be able to get into my program of choice. I did not make the conscious choice to avoid my school work, but my floormates will attest that during this time school was the least of my worries, it was a very low point and I was more concerned with regaining my will to get out of bed, eat more than a meal a day, and shower than to do my work.
This experience has been incredibly stressful considering I've historically been an excellent student, when I got into Queen's I envisioned myself having a place where I could achieve my true potential, and unfortunately my illness has gotten in the way. Despite this I'm doing everything in my power to right this situation and come back to school next year in as best shape as possible. I'm also working this summer from May until September 1st, where I hope the consistency of a 9 to 5 job will help correct my schedule and get me back on track.
I hope that you understand my situation and grant me this appeal, getting into Queen's was one of my greatest accomplishments and it was incredibly disheartening to see it all go to waste because of this unforeseen illness. I do have the potential to succeed and have done so for years before coming to Kingston, and I would love to have the opportunity to do so here as well, I just need a little bit of help right now.
Thank you for your consideration,
Jack Foxwell.
