Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
Please take this letter into consideration for my request to drop the course HLTH497.
I attended 2 seminars of this course and was excited for the material being discussed. As this was my only seminar course, it was the only course where I was required to attend campus for participation marks.
My circumstances changed in Week 2 of the course, when an event occurred which drastically affected my mental wellbeing. I previously endured mental health problems in October, which were stabilized with medication and support systems. However, due to this event I felt unable to cope with the circumstances and thus, anxious to attend HLTH497. I was still interested in the course material, however, found it difficult to partake in activities which required leaving my house and interacting with other people. My part time jobs serving and bartending also suffered as I would give away multiple shifts due to a lack of motivation and anxiety when interacting with males. I was still able to continue in my other registered courses online, because grading was not contingent on participation. As a result, I was able to complete assignments from home.
As stated, the impact of my circumstances was an increased anxiety when interacting with others, which had a direct impact on my seminar course; which was based primarily on active conversation in the classroom. I was unable to appeal the course by the drop deadline due to a delinquency in my SOLUS account from an RBC line of credit which suffered because I was unable to work as many shifts to make the minimum payments.
Since the incident occurred, I have attempted to make amends with the situation in order to move forward. I have reached out to supportive friends and tried to use the gym as an outlet. I was advised to increase my previous prescription for antidepressants in order to manage the anxiety and did so at LaSalle at Queen¿¿s. Due to this, I do not believe that my academic performance will be compromised in the future.
Sincerely,
Shelley Bebelaar
