Petition Letter: To whom it may concern:
I am writing this letter to appeal late dropping two courses (CISC 124 and LING340) from winter 2019 term.
I am aware that I have been struggling academically for a quite a bit of time now. To put it as concisely as possible the reason for my academic struggles has been my mental health. I am currently in a state of depression and have been for years now. I have been suffered from deep depression and anxiety since my second year, at that time the courses start to get challenging, which made me feel struggled with the course work, I lived in the fear of fail of one of the fundamental courses (CISC124) of my program. I spend as much as effort I can do on this course, but I still failed. At that point of time I start to questioning my intelligent and ability on study. After failing this course, I start to have PTSD of all the content about this course. I know it is not fair to say that, but failing this course is the starting point of my depression and anxiety. I did not take any courses in the fall 2018 term to take break and forces on my mental health, then I decided to return to school so I can retake the courses I failed before. But I was not ready. It is hard for me to read and memorize due to the influence of depression. I can hardly sit still and all the hardness on study made me recalled to pain from two years ago. I find out it is so hard for me to do anything, for example, eating, sleep, taking care of self-hygiene, I can not even leave my bed. I stopped taking my depression medication and try to committed suicide. All I want to say is my mental health situation is hitting the low point of this time. I can see my words are little bit mess, but it is awfully hard for me to describe my recent life. In the past I have not spoken to my professors because I am was scared of being rejected. I understand that it is their job to help their students but asking for help has not been the easiest thing for me given the aforementioned mental health problem.
For this reason, I sincerely ask you to consider my appeal to drop these two courses.
For my future plan, I will take a break this summer and see if I need more time to put university aside and force on my mental health. I will keep seeing psychologist and consular. Keep taking medication treatment and make sure I can get better.
My consular in Queen's is Dr. Arunima Khanna and my doctor in school clinic is Dr. Stephine Butt, if needed, they can support my appealing. I also have the diagnostic result from hospital, I can attach the document if needed
Thank You once again for taking the time to read my letter of appeal.
Sincerely,
Ran Huo
