Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Kirusika Thanabalasinham and I am appealing to drop Cisc 260 (2019 Winter Term).
My years at Queen¿¿s University has been quite long and very tough due to unfortunate circumstances. Many circumstances came into play but no matter what I have not given up in trying to finish up my degree. About three years ago I had been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and since then it only got tougher for me to manage everything at once. Due to the health condition being unresolved with the constant trial and error process with medications, my studies were effected heavily.¿During my winter semester this year I had alot of health issues which resulted in many sick days due to my on-going autoimmune disease acting up once again. However, I tried my best to get through it but again it had an effect on my Cisc 260 course. Along with earlier diagnosis I was now diagnosed with chronic fatigue and on top of that my body was continuously in pain for reasons still unknown. Unable to fully understand and manage what was happening to my physical health I was unable to focus on my course to excel. During this semester my grandmother had passed away and this took a toll on me. While I was trying to process her passing away, an unfortunate bombing event had happened in my home town of Srilanka. It was a shocking situation which put me in emotional distress. The situation caused immense worry, stress, sadness and anxiety. Unable to have any form of communication to find out if my family members were okay caused alot of distress. In order to perform the last rites for my late grandmother, my mother had gone to visit Sri Lanka at the time and not being able to hear from her for some days during the bombing was a scary situation. Constantly being updated only through the news and nothing else was tough to handle. It had taken me some time to process everything but I am doing much better now.
During my sick days, my grandmother¿¿s passing and the unfortunate bombing event that took place in my hometown I had informed my professor. After writing my exam she had advised me to appeal to drop the course considering my circumstances. Cisc 260 is the only course I need in order to graduate. I am really hoping I could take the course again next year and finish up my degree that I have been struggling to complete. It has been a long journey and I would like to get this one course that is holding me back from graduating done with by next year. I hope I will be given a chance to enroll in the course again for next winter.
Sincerely,
Kirusika Thanabalasinham
